In a good photo, the viewer can immediately identify the subject. While this seems like a no-brainer, a surprisingly number of photos fails to clearly identify the main subject. Instead, the 'busyness' of too many elements compete for the viewer's attention. A useful question to ask yourself: what is this a photo of?
